Right so I’m thinking we have 3 levels, can add more if we have time.
At the moment I’ve got reference images together for 3 levels, here is what I’m thinking of:
Level 1 (name: Outland):
It’s set on a planet that shares characteristics with Mars. A Barren, dry, hot, dusty and very red/orange/black. The track would be either raised off the ground so you can get a good sense of where you are or dug into the ground, the only problem with that is that you won’t be able to see anything around you really. I think the first option would be better. The sky would be blacky/red/orangey with stars and shit flying about (meteorites/shooting stars/planets?) I’ll upload all the reference images here so you can all get an idea of what I’m thinking of creating. Loads of particle effects, dusts/smoke/fire etc. As for the track itself I was thinking of making it just like a raised path (quite high, 2/3 meters?) raised off the earth itself with no sort of barriers to make it look like it’s just been thrown together.
Level 2 (name: Sin City)
Ok so this level is basically going to be a futuristic city kind of track. The track will be just like a road running through a city. I’ve taken a lot of influence from stuff like Tron/NFS Underground/Tokyo Drift/Too fast Too Furious and stuff like that. Loads of neons with long exposure on that shit. Could make some cars be traveling around in the sky just to make it look like it’s from the year 3000 or something. The sky again black with a hint of purple and some weird kind of vortex slipstream clouds floating about, high rise buildings with loads more neons. I want to add those red/white border things at the side of the track as well. Again I’ll upload references.
Level 3 (name: 2000)
Ok the last one I was thinking of doing was either a realistic kind of racing environment (present day) - just to show that we can make shit realistic, or a kind of underground/underwater track. Something that we could make out as a kind of ‘back to the future’ race. I think it would be cool to make a realistic one and relatively easy seeing as there is an abundance of reference material. But basically, I want it to just look like a rally track, through woods and trees etc, over countrysides and dirt tracks, then maybe a tarmac section. Something like they did in Colin McRay rally 2 back in the day - that shit was epic. Black and white checkered bumpers at the side, realistic starting block etc. More images to come.
Other ideas I’ve had are:
One level where you actually race around a full planet. If you imagine saturn, then the race is actually racing ontop of the asteroid belt that orbits it, could be quite cool to be racing next to some MSSIVE earth that is rotating next to you and you have to dodge meteorites and/or shoot them, again set in space with loads of stars and ships etc. Another ideas was the underwater thing, like when you’re walking through an aquarium except you’re racing.
Probably should add that I reckon it would make it easier/save time (if we are running short) to just create 2 tracks and reverse one of them for one of the level, don’t think you could tell really unless you have like a head down view on the loading screen (which we probably should) - forget that.
Anyone got any comments or ideas they want to share feel free to do so.
P.s I’ll also make the ambient sound/music for all the levels.
Sounds good, I like a lot of those ideas; we could combine some of the elements together in one track though. Like in the first one you mentioned having a raised track vs one set into the ground, we can just have part of the track raised and another part lowered, then could keep going down underground, into caves maybe (think star wars pod racer game, where you go through caves and have to dodge pillars etc), with underground rivers with greener scenerey (more plants) and stuff, and then back up to the surface. Would be a great way of showing the planet surface from up high, and then getting closer to the details.
ReplyDeleteAgree with having some sort of mental space type sky, dunno how hard it would be to get meteors to be generated, fly across the sky and dissapear but that sounds sweet.
Yeah cool, never though of stuff going underground. I think the best level (or most fitting) for that would probably be Outland. Wonder how hard it is to do, gonna watch some of these unity tutorials now.
